Peace Corps/The Gambia is currently seeking applicants who are native speakers of Mandinka, Wolof, Pulaar, or Sarahule. Applications will be kept in file for future positions.
COMPENSATION: Basic compensation range GMD 354,333 to GMD 549,209/annum, negotiable based on salary history and experience.
Benefits include medical allowance, annual leave, and sick leave etc.

LOCATION OF THE POSITION


This position will primarily be based in rural communities near Massembeh. Work may also take place at the Peace Corps’ training centre in Massembeh, at the Peace Corps’ main office in Kombo, or throughout the rest of The Gambia.
The United States Peace Corps, a U.S. government agency that leads volunteer programs in 65 countries around the world, is seeking a Language and Culture Facilitator.
Under the direct supervision of the Deputy Director of Programming and Training/Training Manager (DDPT/TM) and the coordination of the Language and Cross-Culture Manager (LCCM), the Language and Culture Facilitator (LCF) is responsible for comprehensively facilitating the language acquisition and cultural orientation training activities for Peace Corps Trainees and Volunteers (PCT/Vs) in The Gambia. The LCF will provide small group language instruction in one or more Gambian languages to United States American Trainees and Volunteers during pre-service training (PST) as well as during other training events during the year. The language, culture, and integration skills taught by the LCF will be integral in the success of Peace Corps Volunteers assigned to The Gambia.

Major responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 
  • Language and Culture Instruction
  • Training Materials Development

Minimum Qualifications

  • Applicants must address each minimum qualification listed below with specific and comprehensive information supporting each item using the attached application form. Failure to do so will result in a determination that the applicant is not qualified. 
  •  Minimum of a valid secondary school/high school teaching certificate (Higher Diploma in Secondary Education/Higher Teacher’s Certificate or equivalent).
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Fluency in at least two of the following languages (Mandinka, Fula/Pulaar, Sarahule, Jolla and Wolof).
  • Minimum of two years of full-time teaching experience or previous experience as LCF. • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook) and use of the internet.
  • Comprehensively familiar with Gambian cultural norms
  • Able to understand and explain how Gambian and American cultural norms are similar and how they are different.
  • Able to work in a team.
  • Able to multitask and effectively organize time and activities to meet reporting deadlines.
  • Must be willing to live in a rural community for long periods of time with limited amenities.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in education
  • Fluency in more than two Gambian languages
  • Experience in taking or developing online courses.
  • Previous experience working with Americans or American organizations.
  • Able to appreciate the value the United States and United States Americans place on diversity.

  • The selected individual may be asked to complete one or more temporary duty assignments at other Peace Corps posts, transfer to another Peace Corps post, or complete a detail with another USG Agency, a Peace Corps Headquarters office, or with a post other than Peace Corps/The Gambia. As part of an approved detail, the individual may be requested to perform work that may be specifically in line with or may add to the duties stated in the contract.
