Programme Overview

The LLM in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa (HRDA) is a prestigious one-year intensive course. Selected individuals will spend six months in Pretoria and six months at one of the 12 partner universities across Africa. Taught by eminent lecturers, the program includes practical training exercises and fosters a network of human rights professionals.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the University of Pretoria LLM Scholarship, candidates must meet the following requirements:

  • Be nationals of any African nation
  • Receive an invitation to apply for admission to pursue a Master’s Degree (LLM/MPhil) in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa at the Centre for Human Rights, University of Pretoria
  • Possess a first degree in Law (LLB, licence en droit, or licenciatura em direito), or an Honours degree pertinent to human rights and democratisation
  • Exhibit a professional, academic, and personal dedication and interest in human rights and democratisation in Africa
  • Demonstrate the potential to utilize the qualification in their future career in Africa (multiplier effect)
  • Promote geographic and gender diversity across Africa
  • Represent marginalized communities (e.g., individuals with disabilities, indigenous groups, LGBTI individuals)

Required Documents

To apply for this scholarship, candidates must be prepared to submit:
  • Previous academic records/transcripts
  • Degree certificate(s)
  • Copy of passport bio-data page
  • A clear, high-quality photograph of themselves
  • TOEFL, SAT1, or IELTS certificate (for those who studied at non-English institutions)
